Long-lasting hydrophilic surface generated on poly(dimethyl siloxane) with photoreactive zwitterionic polymers

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) is known as one of the most established polymers for making elastomers. Therefore, it commonly used fabrication biomedical devices. Many PDMS surface modification processes have been proposed recently to increase reliability in medical fields. However, modified surface's long-term stability still limited. Hydrophobic recovery widely recognized a factor that reduces efficacy modification. The photoreactive zwitterionic polymer effectively suppresses hydrophobic PDMS, according current analysis. monomer, 2-[2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyldimethylanmmonium] ethyl benzophenoxy phosphate (MBPP) was polymerized by conventional radical polymerization and coated on O2-plasma-treated specimens. specimens were immersed an aqueous solution 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) exposed under ultraviolet (UV) radiation 3 h. Instead, poly(MBPP) (PMBPP), benzophenone (BP) also photoinitiator. time-dependent change wettability elemental composition specimen monitored nine weeks after photo-grafting poly[2-methacryloyloxyethyl (MPC)] (PMPC). advancing receding contact angles (θA/θR) pristine 112°/71° significantly decreased immediately grafting PMPC regardless types hydrophobicity gradually recovered, θA changed from 12° 81° storage air atmosphere when BP photoinitiator graft MPC. hydrophilicity (θA ≅ 20°) grafted with PMBPP initiator preserved weeks. This showed excellent lubricity non-fouling properties periods. polymer, PMBPP, then macrophotoinitiator PDMS.
